(As told to the reader by Cary – In her own words)
I could never have imagined the disaster that was coming that evening. It was a Saturday.
That morning I had gone out to Mom and Dad’s house to see them off on a vacation trip to Washington, D.C. They deserved a vacation; I had convinced them.
I had also done most of the planning for them: hotels, museums, other attractions, and restaurants. I tried to not miss anything I thought they’d enjoy.
But they didn’t even make it to the capital. The accident happened in route; a truck jack-knifed blocking the interstate. It was at night and very foggy; Dad didn’t see the truck until it was too late.
It was after 11:00 pm when the police came to my apartment. They were there to let me know my world had changed forever. Life became a jumble. I had to immediately become an adult on my own instead of a kid just finishing college.
I survived; there were times when I thought I wouldn’t.
I met new people. Mike Webster was one of them. I tried to find my birth mother. That brought me to New Orleans where my life changed again. I discovered things about my life that changed me even more.
I’ll tell you more … later.
