Cary Anne Warren exhibited two important traits early in life. The first had to do with her intelligence. Cary’s parents, Alice and Kenneth Warren, began reading to Cary when she was still a baby. Her mother started with fairy tales. Kenneth didn’t; he began with the westerns he loved so much. Cary knew who the author, Louis L’Amour, was before she became aware of the current president.
By sheer exposure, Cary began reading very early. The exposure helped, but her intelligence was the trait that made it all possible. She wanted to know more … and more. Cary’s intelligence allowed her to understand what she read and what was read to her. Curiosity was the second trait that allowed Cary to be a step ahead of her peers. She wanted to know more about everything in her life—from schoolwork to how her dad’s car worked. Alice and Kenneth were happy to indulge Cary’s cravings.
By the time she met Mike Webster and Rage Doyle, Cary had trained herself to seek out answers to questions when there didn’t appear to be any. She was exactly the right person for the unique team Doyle was assembling. And the team was right for her.
